What to ask before booking a repair

Describe the symptom

Record the exact model, when the problem began and what triggers it. Mention drops, liquid exposure and previous work. Say whether another cable, a software update or filter cleaning changed the symptom. A photo of an intermittent display line or error message can help a technician when the problem does not appear during inspection.

Read the estimate

An estimate should name the replacement part and whether it is new, refurbished or third-party. Check whether labour, consumables, post-repair testing and a workmanship warranty are included, and what happens if inspection finds another fault. Screen or battery jobs can also need adhesive, a seal or software configuration. Ask how any claimed water resistance will be checked after opening.

Protect data and check coverage

Back up important files before service. Google’s Repair mode can limit access to data on eligible Pixel phones, but it does not replace a backup. Ask whether the provider expects a reset and how it handles your passcode. A warranty, care plan or model-specific program may cover the work; Google’s Pixel 8 display program is one example. For swelling or exposed wiring, stop using the device and ask the provider for safe handling instructions.
